ARS Posts Latest Edition of Nutrition Briefs

By Judy McBride
April 5, 2000

The Agricultural Research Service has posted the April 2000 issue of the Food & Nutrition Research Briefs to its web site at:

http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/np/fnrb/fnrb400.htm

The Research Briefs is a quarterly newsletter containing the latest ARS findings in human nutrition, food freshness and safety, and new foods and varieties.

Included in this issue:

  • Overweight people who also have high cholesterol levels would be better advised to lose the excess weight rather than turn to a heart-healthy diet.
  • Whey proteins--a class of minor proteins found in milk--look promising for reducing breast cancer risk, based on early findings with rats.
  • Only one-third of teens in this small survey met the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for fat and fiber intake. But their diets were highest in seven vitamins and five minerals.

ARS is the chief scientific agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
