Petroleum: a naturally occurring oil found beneath the Earth's surface that mostly contains highly flammable compounds called hydrocarbons. Petroleum is dubbed a "fossil fuel" because it comes from the remains of organisms that died long ago and were deposited in layers of soil and rock.
