Observing mites

First they freeze the mites right on their hosts or foods by instantly chilling them in liquid nitrogen to -320 degrees F. This prevents them from moving or becoming squashed, so they look just like in real life. Then the scientists use a very high-power microscope to photograph the tiny animals up to 50,000 times larger than life. It is called a scanning electron microscope .
