These are Eastern Subterranean termites! You just heard them under a pine tree. "Subterranean" means below the earth. Their scientific name is Reticulitermes flavipes.

These soldier termites pictured here have strong mandibles (jaws) to chew wood, old roots, tree stumps and fallen branches.
