Scientists Joe Miller and Allen Heagle in an open-top growth chamber

Plant physiologist Joe Miller (left) and plant pathologist Allen Heagle discuss an experiment at the ARS’ Air Quality-Plant Growth and Development Research Unit, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

They grow the plants in these open-top chambers so they can add extra ozone or carbon dioxide to the air surrounding the plants—or they can remove these gases from the natural air.
