The deep, sandy soils at the Sandhills Research Station in North Carolina (a part of North Carolina State University) are ideal for drought-tolerance research in soybeans. Withholding water for 2 weeks in August is sufficient to induce a severe drought so that plant response, including yield, can be evaluated. Typically, plants are irrigated each week from planting through August 1, after which nature takes over.
