Entomologist James Vogt examines a lifter cup in a phorid fly rearing system. The cups alternate up and down inside trays containing worker ants and their young and cause the ants to trail back and forth in seeking shelter from attacking phorid flies. Being frequently on the move, the ants are unable to group together to defend against the flies.
