Undisturbed since 1940, 3- to 6-acre fenced-off plots have been set up throughout the 4,300 acres of the Southern Plains Experimental Range to help gauge the ecosystem’s overall health. Rangeland scientists Bob Gillen (left) and Phillip Sims examine plant species in one of these “exclosures” to see how grazing influences plant diversity.
