In Lane, Oklahoma, ARS scientists are grafting watermelon stems onto squash or gourd rootstock to produce firmer melons. This trait could help watermelon take the lead in the fresh-cut produce industry, possibly surpassing the huge fresh-cut salad and vegetable market.
