Image Number K9592-2

This flag, circa 1862-1865, was examined by ARS scientists because its fabric construction is similar to that of the Star-Spangled Banner's, which dates to 1814. All fabrics for the flags at this time were imported from England. The Civil War-era flag was on loan from the Cape May County Historical Museum in New Jersey to the Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, Pa.
