Live trees are attacked as well as buildings. The Formosan subterranean
termite is known to infest over 50 species of live plants. Thirty percent of
the historically important live oak trees in the New Orleans area are infested.
Trees serve as a source of termites which can subsequently invade nearby homes.
Research is underway to determine the most effective manner of treating live
trees.
