used
Does ARS plan to release the HoneySweet plum as a commercial variety?
Deregulation of the variety by APHIS is a first step in potential
release of the HoneySweet plum. Potential release of the HoneySweet plum will
require a number of additional steps. FDA and EPA approval of deregulation is
also going to be obtained before ARS will release the variety. With APHIS
approval for deregulation under consideration, ARS is expanding its discussions
with plum breeders, the tree fruit industry and other interested parties on
possible scenarios for utilizing the Plum pox resistance of HoneySweet. It is
likely that the first use of the HoneySweet plum will be as a breeding stock
and not as a commercial variety. Some plum breeders may want to use HoneySweet
to develop experimental varieties with plum pox resistance.
Will HoneySweet fresh fruit have to be labeled as genetically
