About the Agricultural Research Service

The Agricultural Research Service is the chief scientific agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some 1,700 ARS scientists conduct research at about 100 locations in the United States and five in other countries.

The scientists work to find--and make available--solutions to high-priority problems facing the nation's agricultural and related sectors. The scientists' goals include:

  • Making sure we will have high-quality, safe foods and other products
  • Assessing Americans' nutritional needs
  • Strengthening the national economy and economical opportunities in rural areas and communities
  • Protecting and improving soil, water, and other natural resources
