Senior
Advisor
Directorate for Social, Behavioral,
and Economic Sciences
National Science Foundation
Sally M. Kane joined NSF
in September 2002, coming from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. Dr. Kane is an economist; her Ph.D. is from Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, Maryland. During her career she has held positions
in both research and public policy offices, including serving as Senior
Economist for nearly two years at the President's Council of Economic
Advisors from 1993-95. Dr. Kane's research interests span several broad
topics including climate change and variability, environmental and natural
resource management, public policy evaluation, science and technology
policy, risk analysis, decision-making under uncertainty, and the value
of information.
One of Dr. Kane's primary responsibilities at NSF is to lead the staff-level
effort implementing NSF's new area of priority entitled "Human and
Social Dynamics" (HSD); in this capacity she chairs the NSF-wide
Implementation Group. HSD is a five-year NSF-wide initiative, building
on the efforts of all of the research directorates and offices. It is
the first such initiative to be grounded in the social sciences. Dr.
Kane has also recently been named Co-Chair of the "Portfolio and
Priorities Working Group" of the new OSTP inter-agency Subcommittee
on Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences. Dr. Kane continues to be
actively interested in climate research, including the topics of climate
impacts, societal adaptation, decision-making, role of information, risk,
and public policy.
