Background: Globally, low nitrogen use efficiencies cost farmers, governments, and society billions of dollars every year. There are several tools that can be used to assess nitrogen use efficiencies and reduce the impact of agriculture on surface water quality, groundwater quality, and the emissions of greenhouse gases. USDA has national programs that work towards improving nitrogen use efficiencies.
Scientists and conservationists from two sister USDA agencies (ARS and NRCS) have worked together to create a site that will host a diverse collection of nitrogen tools and data sets that will support these USDA initiatives. This site will provide scientists and policymakers in the U.S. and from around the world with tools and data to make assessments of the effects of management decisions on nitrogen use efficiencies.
