The Fruit Laboratory Research Unit is responsible for the:

  • Development of flavorful, large-fruited disease-resistant cultivars through breeding and molecular methods
  • Study of the infective processes of pathogens affecting small fruit
  • Identification and characterization of genes involved in blueberry cold hardiness, chilling requirement, and disease resistance
  • Identification and characterization of genes involved in responses to high temperature, flowering and fruit production in strawberry
  • Developing genetic transformation systems for strawberries and blueberries
  • Development of new sustainable production systems for blueberries and strawberries
  • Development of molecular markers and genetic maps to facilitate manipulation of important traits of small fruits
  • Characterization of a large collection of exotic pathogens of citrus and the genetic relationships among phytopathogenic bacteria affecting citrus
