River Restoration Research
headline bar

River restoration is gaining popularity throughout the United States and the world as communities work to repair damages to stream corridor ecosystems and the amenities they provide. Relatively little research has been done to support rehabilitation and restoration of sand-bed streams damaged by accelerated erosion and channel incision. In connection with the DEC program, the NSL has conducted long-term studies of stream corridor rehabilitation on 5 streams, described below. Results of this research and allied efforts have provided a foundation for a textbook, River Channel Restoration, for certain sections of the Interagency Stream Corridor Restoration Handbook, and are being used by the ASCE Task Committee on River Restoration.  More recent work has focused on rehabilitation of backwater habitats within floodplains of medium-sized rivers.
