USDA-ARS Publications from the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory on the Asian Citrus Psyllid and Huanglongbing Disease

The citrus industry in the United States is being jeopardized by huanglongbing disease, also known as citrus greening or yellow shoot disease. The psyllid was first found in Florida during June 1998 and is now established throughout the state’s citrus-growing region.   Huanglongbing was found in southern Florida during late August 2005 and has since been detected at many locations across the citrus growing region .   The psyllid was found in Texas during 2001 and in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana during 2008.  During 2008, the psyllid spread across Mexico and, in September, invaded southern California.   During 2009, huanglongbing was found in South Carolina.  Huanglongbing was found in California and Texas during 2012.

A number of USDA-ARS scientists among the three research units at the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory in Fort Pierce, Florida, are conducting research in search of solutions to the huanglongbing problem.   Presented here is a partial list of pertinent, refereed research papers published by scientists from each of the three research units.   Many of these publications were the result of collaborations with USDA-ARS scientists at other locations and scientists with other institutions such as the University of Florida and Florida Department of Agriculture.
