Nutrient Losses from Row Crops
headline bar

With the use of large, monolith lysimeters, nutrient movement through the soil under row crops has been (and continues to be) evaluated. Nitrate leaching has been the primary focus of studying nutrient movement under continuous corn and corn/soybean rotation systems. Among the findings are: NO3-N concentrations in shallow groundwater under continuous corn fertilized at rates for optimum production will frequently be higher than 10 ppm; using a nitrification inhibitor can greatly reduce NO3-N leaching in a continuous corn system; and NO3-N concentrations in shallow groundwater under a corn/soybean rotation will be less than under continuous corn and will probably be less than 10 ppm.
