The Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental Staff supports the overall mission of the scientific community by planning and implementing comprehensive safety, occupational health and environmental programs; advising management, supervisors and employees of their collective responsibilities for participating in programs; and fostering awareness of these issues in the Beltsville Area.

In meeting this mission, the SOHES strives to enhance the safety, occupational health and environmental interactions of all Beltsville Area employees, to reduce hazards to people and to avoid/minimize the release of pollutants into the environment (air, water, land) within the legal framework, and to educate on proper compliance and procedures.
