Dr. Hagen retired from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in 2009 and is currently working as a collaborator with the Engineering & Wind Erosion Research Unit. Dr. Hagen received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University in 1980. He served as unit Research Leader (1988-1994) for the Wind Erosion Research Unit and team leader during development of the Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) model (1986-1999). He has 41 years of research focused on a vast range of wind erosion issues.
He is recognized internationally and participated in one of the earliest US-USSR technology exchange programs as well as two projects in Poland. His personal research topics ranged from wind barriers to wind turbines. Most recently, Dr. Hagen developed and validated the erosion and soil submodels in WEPS. He actively supported the use of research models in real world scenarios such as making WEPS simulations for a Corp of Engineers and EPA project to develop a "Confined Disposal Facility" to contain dredged contaminated material from Indiana Harbor in Chicago, Ill. Similarly, his recognized expertise in wind erosion led to his appointment on an advisory panel addressing dust emissions from Owens Lake, Ca. where the WEPS model was used for design of control structures.
