Rumela is a Research Associate in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Kansas State University.  She is working on packing factors of major food grain crops in US as part of a Specific Cooperative Agreement USDA-ARS and Kansas State University. This project is aimed to develop and improve the existing packing factor table of the US Warehouse Handbook with a science-based differential Janssen model, where the vertical stress of the overbearing grain height is predicted by accounting the variation of bulk densities, depth, and material properties. This is a collaborative project between ARS (Manhattan), Kansas State University, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Georgia, and is funded by the Risk Management Agency (RMA). Rumela mainly focuses on field data computation through an agreement with Kansas State.

She is also working on low oil DDGS (M-DDGS) for physical, chemical, and moisture cooling studies for proper flow and handling of DDGS through hoppers.  Prior to this position her work at South Dakota State University involved modeling and quantifying flow properties of DDGS under varying storage and process conditions.
