Lea A. Rempel

 

The primary focus of Dr. Rempel’s research is improvement to sow productive lifetime.  Sow productive lifetime is a complex trait and can be impacted by multiple constitutive and/or consecutive events (e.g. management, nutrition, fertility, structural soundness, health status, growth/development).  Current studies involve looking at metabolic pathways (i.e. urea and creatine) that may impact the return to estrus rate in sows following weaning.  Lactation is a demanding period of time for the dam and examination of the variation of metabolic duress during this period of time will help define applications or management strategies producers can utilize.  Dr. Rempel employs physiological measurements as well as genetic measurements (SNP genotyping) to conduct analyses that may lead to management aides and/or marker-assisted selection standards for producers.
