

"Science Day for Kids" Mar 9, 2004

"Science Day for Kids" was held at the Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event featured a day at work with the USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists. Highlights included collecting samples of rumen contents from dairy cows, microscopic examination of the rumen, chromatography of candy, cucumber research, and the benefits of cereal crops in the human diet. Thirty fourth graders with their teachers participated in the very hands-on activities.

"CALS Day for Kids" was held at the UW Stock Pavilion, 1675 Linden Drive, Madison, Wisconsin from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Hosted by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Student Council, the event provided hands-on activities, face-to-face interaction with animals, and colorful displays aimed at teaching children the importance of Wisconsin's agriculture industry.
CCRU display: Trifold display board with the theme of-- Science in your Shopping Cart--. Focus was on Oat and Barley Research with lots of food products made from oats and barley on display. We had a power point presentation with 12 slides featuring people working in the labs changing at 7 second intervals. Our talk focused on the health benefits of eating oats and barley as we passed around the food items. We handed out book covers — "Agricultural Research is UDDERLY Awesome". Approximately 900 fourth graders with their teachers attended.

Wisconsin State Fair ("Ag Ventures" Day) Aug 10, 2004
Lauri Herrin and Rachel Angel from the EEO Committee had an exhibit on "Science in Your Shopping Cart" and Oat and Barley Research and Nutrition. Lots of food products made from oats and barley were on display. A powerpoint presentation of ARS research in Madison, Wisconsin was continuously running. Over 450 book covers ("Agricultural Research is UDDERLY Awesome") were handed out. The exhibit promoting agricultural research by the USDA ran from 9:00am until 4:00pm.

New Building Update Oct 15, 2004
Architectural design is complete for the new Cereal Crops Research building. In early October, a construction contract was awarded. Completion of new building with greenhouse is expected in Spring 2006.
