Yoram J. Kaufman received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the Technion - Israeli Institute of Technology in Israel and his Ph.D. from the Tel-Aviv University in Israel. He came to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 1979 on an N.R.C. fellowship award. He is currently a Senior Fellow and atmospheric scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He served as the project scientist of the Earth Observing System first satellite: EOS-Terra through its launch in December, 1999.

His present work includes theoretical and experimental research on atmospheric radiative transfer and remote sensing, including remote sensing of aerosols, their interaction with clouds and radiation, their impact on climate, and their relationship to their sources, for example, fires due to biomass burning in the tropics. He conducted the Smoke/Sulfate, Clouds and Radiation (SCAR) field experiments in both Brazil and the U.S. to characterize smoke aerosol properties, their emissions from fires and their effect on clouds and radiation.

Dr. Kaufman has over 150 refereed publications. He is the 7th recipient of the NASA/GSFC Nordberg Award for Earth Sciences and has received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement.
