Outside Awards
BARC
received a Closing the Circle Award on June 10, 2003 for its use of biobased products from the White House Task Force on Recycling, Office of the Federal Environmental Executive. The award recognizes the most effective and innovative programs to implement environmental management systems at Federal facilities.

Emy Pfeil, Environmental Quality Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
received the 2002 ARS IR-4 Meritorious Service Award for outstanding and sustained contributions to the IR-4 Program presented by the IR-4 Project Management Committee and received a Special Thanks Award for efforts to rescue IR-4 residue samples following the tornado at Beltsville presented by the Office of Minor Use Pesticides.

received the 2003 Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award from the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.

received the Federal Laboratories Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer for the development of a superior soybean inoculant and wide adoption by farmers.

received the Imagine Excellence Award 2002 (for outstanding and dedicated leadership).

Robert A. Owens, Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory, Plant Sciences Institute
received the J. Merrill and Adeline Wallace Award from the International Organization of Citrus Virologists (IOCV) for the best full-length manuscript submitted for publication of the triennial meeting of the IOCV.

Douglass R. Miller, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, Plant Sciences Institute
received the L.O. Howard Award, sponsored by the Eastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America, for distinguished achievement in the field of entomology.

Thomas J. Jackson, Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
received the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Group Achievement Award for Outstanding Teamwork of the Aqua Mission Team.

Bob Wall, Biotechnology and Germplasm Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was appointed member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cooperative Research Centre for Innovative Dairy Products, Melbourne, Australia, and was appointed Adjunct Professor, Department of Animal and Avian Science, University of Maryland.

dd>was appointed Program Co-Chairman for the 2004 Annual Conference of the International Embryo Transfer Association to be held in Portland, Oregon.

was appointed to Executive Board, Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) and was re-Appointed Adjunct Professor, Department of Animal and Avian Science, University of Maryland.

Le Ann Blomberg, Biotechnology and Germplasm Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was awarded an American Physiological Society/NIDDK Minority Travel Fellowship to present her research on serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) durng elongation of pre-implantation swine embryos at the Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego, CA on April 11-15, 2003

Robert E. Davis, Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory, Plant Sciences Institute
was awarded the Medal of the Order of the Knight’s Cross by the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania for helping to establish a Laboratory of Microbial Molecular Biology at the Institute of Botany in Vilnius, Lithuania.

William P. Kustas, Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was elected an American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fellow.

Wayne Wolf, Food Composition Laboratory, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center
was elected Fellow of AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists International) which recognizes the dedication and commitment of those who serve the Association.

Yakov Pachepsky, Environmental Microbial Safety Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was elected Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America.

Joe Urban, Nutrient Requirements and Functions Laboratory, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center
was elected President of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitology and appointed editor of the journal Infection and Immunity.

Julie Long, Growth Biology Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute
was invited to present an overview of ARS and Biotechnology and Germplasm Laboratory poultry reproduction research at the 2003 Leadership Conference of the National Turkey Federation held in Washington DC.
