2008 Apiary Inspector's Workshop
The Bee Research Laboratory has been periodically sponsoring an Apiary Inspector's Workshop since 1969. This annual or biannual two day regional meeting is designed to update apiary inspectors and research and extension apiculturists in Maryland and surrounding states about the latest developments in apiculture, with an emphasis on honey bee diseases and pests. Currently the meeting is being held every other year during late winter. The next meeting - the 33rd Apiary Inspector's Workshop - is scheduled for March 4 & 5, 2008.

2008 Bee Research Laboratory (BRL) Open House
The BRL will host an open house for the public to highlight honey bee research activities conducted at the nation’s capital by the USDA Agriculture Research Service. Visit the lab on Friday, June 27, 2008, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and hear about our research, colony collapse disorder, and molecular studies, and observe colony inspections, queen rearing, instrumental insemination of queens, a variety of beekeeping equipment, and how to identify bee diseases.

Directions All visitors are required to sign in upon arrival to the Bee Research Lab, in building 476. Alternately, visitors may sign in at other visitor check in/out locations.
Dr. Jeffery S. Pettis: 2008 Hoopingarner Award Winner
Dr. Pettis was recognized as having given the best scientific talk at the 2008 National Beekeeping Conference by a vote of the attendees. This entitles him to the Hoopingarner Award to display for a year. This is a joint award given by the American Beekeeping Federation and the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees.
Dawn Lopez: Beltsville Area’s Technician of the Year Award Winner of 2007
Dawn Lopez was recognized as the Beltsville Area’s “Technician of the Year” for her exceptional support of the research performed in the Bee Research Laboratory. She has been assisting Jay Evans in genetic efforts to characterize pests of honey bees and develop insights into bee resistance traits. Dawn was closely involved with identifying traits of agricultural importance in the recently sequenced honey bee genome. She was recognized during a ceremony held in September.
 Baylor College-Honey Bee Genome Project The recently released sequence of the honey bee genome will aid breeding and management, while providing insights into important human diseases.

I. Barton Smith: Beltsville Area's Support Scientist of 2004 I. Barton Smith was chosen as the Beltsville Area's "Suppport Scientist of the Year." As the Laboratory's apiarist, Bart manages approximately 300 research colonies adn participates in many aspects of the Laboratory's research projects. He also oversees the Bee Disease Diagnosis service offered by the Lab. His award was presented at a ceremony in the fall.
Zina Owens: PSI Support Services Assistant of 2004
Zina Owens, Support Services Assistant, was chosen the Plant Sciences Institute (PSI) "Secretary of the Year." Zina is directly responsible for all administrative aspects of the Laboratory. She was recognized at a formal ceremony on June 16, 2004 for "dedication and exceptional professional service to the Bee Research Laboratory."
Dr. Jeffery S. Pettis: EAS James I. Hambleton Award Winner 2004
Jeffery S. Pettis was chosen the winner of the James I. Hambleton memorial award. The award was established by the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) to recognize research excellence in apiculture. Dr. Pettis joins Dr. M. Winston and Dr. G. Robinson as having been awarded the EAS student award early in their career and then being honored with the Hambleton award. Dr. Pettis received the award at the annual meeting of the Eastern Apicultural Society.
Katie Bohrer: AAPA Research Scholarship Award Winner 2003
Katie Bohrer was the winner of the 2003 American Association of Professional Apiculturist (AAPA) Research Scholarship Award. Katie is an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland. Katie has worked as a Biological Science aide at the USDA-ARS Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, MD over the past two years with Dr. Jeff Pettis. Katie has assisted with research on the small hive beetle, queen health issues and Varroa control. Katie is considering several options for advanced degrees in Entomology, Public Health or Biology.
Dr. Jay D. Evans: ARS Outstanding Early Career Scientist 2002
Molecular geneticist Jay D. Evans’ was named an "Outstanding Early Career Scientist of 2002" by the Agricultural Research Service. His research program involves the study of genes that influence honey bee development, pest resistance and immunity to disease. Jay is also involved in the Honey Bee Genome Project.
