Dr. Robert E. Davis, Research Leader of the Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory in Beltsville, was selected by the International Organization for Mycoplasmology (IOM) as the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Emmy Klieneberger-Nobel Award for outstanding research in mycoplasmology.  The Award recognizes Dr. Davis’s distinguished career of contributions to fundamental science and practical solutions in agriculture and microbiology, including advances in understanding nonhelical plant pathogenic mycoplasmas (phytoplasmas), and his discovery of a unique group of helical, cell wall-less bacteria for which he coined the term “spiroplasma”.  The Award was presented at the 19th Congress of the IOM held in Toulouse, France, in July 2012.
