June 2007: The FSIS 2007 Meat & Poultry Inspection Seminar visits BARC and the Food Safety Laboratory
Foreign officials from 24 different countries toured BARC and also visited the Food Safety Laboratory for presentations on meat safety research and poultry inspection research on June 20, as part of the FSIS 2007 Meat & Poultry Inspection Seminar for International Government Officials that was held in Washington, D.C., June 4-22, 2007.
June 2007: ASABE Annual International Meeting
ISL researchers Kevin Chao, Moon Kim, Alan Lefcourt, and Chun-Chieh Yang, and graduate student Priya Narayanan, attended the 2007 Annual International Meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 17-20, to present their research.
June 2007: New Food Safety Laboratory
The new Food Safety Laboratory combines the Instrumentation & Sensing Laboratory and the Food Technology & Safety Laboratory, and also includes scientists from the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory and the Environmental Microbial Safety Laboratory. As of June 10, the Acting Research Leader for the Laboratory is Dr. Morse Solomon.
May 2007: NSTI Nanotech 2007
ISL researcher Yongliang Liu will be attending NSTI Nanotech 2007 in Santa Clara, California, May 20-24. This is the 10th annual nanotechnology conference sponsored by the Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI). Dr. Liu will be giving a poster presentation entitled "Development of SERS Spectroscopy for Routine and Rapid Identification of Escherichia Coli and Listeria Monocytogenes on Ag Colloidal Nanoparticles," about his research performed in collaboration with ISL researchers Yud-Ren Chen, Yongliang Liu, and Kevin Chao, and FTSL researcher Xiangwu Nou.
March 2007: ISL hosts visiting professor
ISL hosted Professor Ana Garrido-Varo, of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry Engineering at the University of Córdoba in Spain, for a month-long visit to learn about ISL spectral imaging research and to share her knowledge of near-infrared spectroscopy for food safety and quality applications.
January 2007: IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging Symposium
Yud-Ren Chen attended the IS&T/SPIE 19th Annual Symposium for Electronic Imaging Science and Technology, held in San Jose, California, January 28 - February 1, 2007. Dr. Chen presented "Development of a Wavelength-Changeable Multi-band Color-mixing Imaging Device and its Application" on February 1st. The conference is sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
October 2006: Optics East 2006
Yud-Ren Chen served as a conference co-chair for the Optics for Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Foods program at the Optics East 2006 symposium held in Boston, Massachusetts, October 1-4, 2006; the program committee included ISL scientists Kevin Chao, Stephen R. Delwiche, and Moon S. Kim. Alan M. Lefcourt, who also presented their research at the meeting. The conference is sponsored by the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
August 2006: 27th International Horticultural Congress & Exhibition (IHC 2006)
While attending the 27th International Horticultural Congress & Exhibition that was held in Seoul, Korea, August 13-19, 2006, Moon S. Kim was recognized as Honorary Scientist of the Year by the Rural Development Administration (Korean analogue to the US Department of Agriculture) for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of agricultural research and development.
This meeting is a major event of the International Society of Horticultural Science, and this year's theme was "Global Horticulture: Diversity and Harmony."
August 2006: 13th International Diffuse Reflectance Conference (IDRC 2006)
At the 13th International Diffuse Reflectance Conference that was held August 6-11,2006, at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Stephen R. Delwiche was elected to be the conference coordinator for IDRC 2008.
Also, Karl Norris, former ISL Research Leader and a charter member of IDRC, was granted an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Wilson College at this year's conference.
IDRC is a biennial conference dedicated to the theory and applications of light propagation (visible, near-infrared, and mid-IR) in scattering and absorbing media. Patterned after a Gordon Research Conference in format, morning and evening plenary sessions consist of half-hour speaker presentations followed by lively discussion while afternoons are kept open for informal discussions between attendees, which include academicians, government scientists, instrument and software manufacturers, and private consultants.
July 2006: ASABE Annual International Meeting
Several ISL researchers attended the Annual International Meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in Portland, Oregon, July 9-12, 2006 to chair technical sessions and to present their research. Presentations included "On-line Evaluation of Hyperspectral Reflectance and Fluorescence Line-scan System for Rapid Detection of Animal Fecal Matter on Apples" by Moon S. Kim, and "Fuzzy Logic-based Differentiation Imaging System for Systemically Diseased Chicken Detection" by Chun-Chieh Yang.
June 2006: IFT 2006 Annual Meeting and Food Expo
Chun-Chieh Yang attended the 2006 Annual Meeting and Food Expo of the Institute of Food Technologists, the non-profit scientific society for food science and technology, in Orlando, FL, June 24-28, 2006. Dr. Yang presented his research on hyperspectral/multispectral imaging for online food safety inspection of poultry carcasses.
April 2006: BARC Poster Day, Honorable Mention
For his poster entitled "Line-scan Machine Vision System for Online Poultry Carcass Inspection," ISL Visiting Scientist Chun-Chieh Yang received Honorable Mention at BARC Poster Day, April 26, 2006.
April 2006: ISL In-Depth Laboratory Review
On April 12-13, 2006, an invited panel of reviewers conducted the latest In-Depth Laboratory Review for the Instrumentation & Sensing Laboratory.
October 2005: Optics East 2005, Sensors and Photonics for Applications in Industry, Life Sciences, and Communications
Yud-Ren Chen was a conference chair for program 5996, Optical Sensors and Sensing Systems for Natural Resources and Food Safety and Quality, at Optics East 2005, to be held in Boston, Massachusetts, October 23-26, 2005. Stephen R. Delwiche and Moon S. Kim also served as a session chairs in the conference, and Byoung-Kwan Cho, Fujian Ding, and Chun-Chieh Yang presented their research. The conference was sponsored by the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
April 2004: BARC Poster Day, 2nd Prize
For his poster entitled "Development of Multispectral Imaging Processing Algorithms for Identification of Wholesome, Septicemic, and Inflammatory Process Chickens," ISL Visiting Scientist Chun-Chieh Yang received the second place prize at BARC Poster Day, April 29, 2004.
March 2004: Advanced BioPhotonics Consortium Business Intelligence conference on BioPhotonics and Food
Kevin Chao was an invited speaker at the BioPhotonics and Food conference held by the Ottawa Life Sciences Council in Ottawa, Canada on March 30, 2004.
January 2004: Rank Prize Funds' symposium for the Assessment of Foodstuffs by the Eye and by Instrumentation
Yud-Ren Chen and Kevin Chao attended the Rank Prize Funds' symposium for The Assessment of Foodstuffs by the Eye and by Instrumentation that was held in Grasmere, England, during the week of January 12-15, 2004. The invitation-only symposium was organized by the Funds' Trustees' Advisory Committee on Opto-Electronics to provide a small and interactive forum for discussion among leading researchers in the field. Dr. Chen presented a lead paper entitled "Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging for assessing quality and safety of agro-foods", and Dr. Chao presented a short paper entitled "On-line inspection of poultry carcasses using the ISL visible/near-infrared spectroscopic system".
November 2003: Israeli Biosecurity and Food Safety Tour
Visitors from Israel visited several BARC laboratories, including ISL, as part of a Biosecurity and Food Safety Tour.
October 2003: SPIE International Symposium on Optical Technologies for Industrial, Environmental, and Biological Sensing
Yud-Ren Chen was a conference chair for the Food Safety Monitoring Program of the SPIE International Symposium on Optical Technologies for Industrial, Environmental and Biological Sensing, held in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 29, 2003. Kevin Chao and Moon S. Kim also chaired sessions. Yud-Ren Chen, Kevin Chao, Moon S. Kim, and Alan M. Lefcourt also presented their research at the conference.
September 2003: French senator Claude Saunier visits ISL
On September 22, 2003, French Senator Claude Saunier visited ISL with his staff, Carol Buy and Philippe Daly, to learn about food safety research at ISL.
July 2003: Feedinfo News Service article about ISL automated poultry inspection system
ISL research was highlighted in the article "Automated poultry inspection close to commercial use" by Don Comis, ARS Information Officer, in Feedinfo News Service's on-line News on July 21, 2003.
April 2003: 11th Annual International Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Conference
Via video conferencing, Yud-Ren Chen presented a 40-minute plenary speech on "Visible/Near-Infrared Imaging Spectroscopy for Assessing Quality and Safety of Agrofoods" at the 11th Annual International Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Conference (NIR2003) in Cordoba, Spain, on April 6, 2003.
March 2003: Biophotonics International article about ISL machine vision systems for fruit inspection
ISL research was highlighted in Janeen Labbe's article "Food security: Machine vision systems inspect fruit" in the March 2003 issue of Biophotonics International.
February 2003: Agricultural engineering professors visit ISL
On February 27, 2003, Dr. Richard Hegg, National Program Leader, Agricultural Engineering, CSREES, and the heads of several university agricultural engineering departments toured ISL facilities and learned about the online visible/near-infrared poultry inspection system currently under commercial prototype testing and development.
