Senator Bryd cuts ribbon at AFSRC Dedication in 1980

Our 25th Anniversary

Senator Robert C. Byrd’s commitment to improving the economy and environment of Appalachia resulted in the dedication of the Appalachian Soil and Water Conservation Research Laboratory in Beaver, West Virginia. At the Laboratory’s August 23, 1980 dedication, Senator Byrd said, “I believe if we are diligent -- if we continue to support the kind of research being done at this laboratory -- our people will continue to progress.  And, we will measure up to the challenge of remaining the proper custodians of our natural resources -- for the benefit of this generation and generations to come.”

Renamed the Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center we proudly continue to work to fulfill Senator Byrd’s visions and serve the people of Appalachia as well as the rest of the nation."
