Lifestyle Weight Control and Potato Consumption

Why are we doing this study?

You visit an information screening meeting to assure that you meet eligibility criteria for participation. If you qualify and are interested in participating in the study, you attend 8 weekly dietitian led group weight-loss classes and have six additional visits for testing. Daily intake of a prepared potato or alternate starch dish will required to be consumed throughout study. This study is being conducted by Susan K. Raatz, Ph.D., R.D., Gerald F Combs, PhD, and James N Roemmich, PhD at the Forks Human Nutrition Center in Grand Forks, ND.

This study is being supported by a grant from the United States Potato Board and the United States Department of Agriculture.

Who is eligible for this study?

  • Men and women between 20-65 years of age
  • Overweight or obese (BMI 25-39.0)
  • Nonsmoker
  • Free of major medical conditions and eating disorders
  • May not be pregnant or lactating
  • Willingness to comply with the demands of the experimental protocol

What is required of me for this study?

  • Complete a 3 day dietary records
  • Attend 8 weekly dietitian led group weight-loss classes
  • Consume one potato or alternate starch dish daily prepared by the Human Nutrition Research Center kitchen
  • Follow prescribed energy restriction and physical activity regimen

Will I get compensated for my time?

You may be compensated as much as $200 for participating.
