Small Fruit and Ornamental Genetic Research
The mission of the small fruit and ornamental genetic group is to develop improved germplasm for ornamental plants and small fruit crops adapted to the Gulf Coast Region. Our research will also focus on determining genetic factors that regulate plant disease, growth characteristics, and tolerance to environmental stress, as well as accelerate the development and release of improved cultivars for production. In addition, we will develop molecular tools to identify and/or map genetic markers for cold tolerance, drought tolerance and pest and pathogen resistance in priority ornamental genera for the Gulf States to enhance breeding programs of woody landscape plants. We will continue our strong relationship with the diverse ornamental plant and small fruit industry and welcome input in this effort.
