USDA/Agricultural Research Service, College of Southern Idaho, and University of Idaho Extension hosted a field day at the CSI fish hatchery in Twin Falls on Thursday October 23, 2008 from 3 PM till 5 PM.

Since August trout have been fed either a fishmeal based feed or a plant
based feed. With feed cost increasing, good feed management becomes ever more important. We also realize that changing major feed ingredients can affect flesh quality and taste.

Presenters randomly drew numbers to determine who got to participate in the triangle taste test.  A triangle taste test is where you see if people can tell which sample is different when they are given 3 samples and two of them are the same.  People were blindfolded for the taste test.

Dr. Keshun Liu, Cereal Chemist in the ARS Trout-Grains project evaluates the fish smell which is important in evaluation taste.

After the triangle taste test was completed, all the guests that didn’t participate in the initial taste test were allowed to taste the difference between fish meal fed fish, and grain fed fish.  The pink color of the meat comes from a pigment they put in the grain based feed, this is to clearly identify which fish were fed which diet.  Standing: Dr. J. Michael Bonman, Supervisory Research Plant Pathologist, USDA-ARS, Aberdeen, ID.

                                          Sri Lankan officials visit

Sri Lankan officials visit researchers at the USDA-ARS and University of Idaho Research and Extension Center. In a training mission, officials from Sri Lanka visited various potato production areas and facilities in Idaho. This tour was sponsored by the U.S. Potato Board and the USDA Cochran Program to introduce U.S. seed potatoes into countries where climate may limit production of seed potatoes. These officials visited with Drs. Jonathan Whitworth (USDA-ARS) and Rajagopalbabu Srinivasan (Univ. of Idaho). Coordinating and accompanying them on their visit is Peter Joyce, U.S. Potato Board.
