Studying Aspects of Adaptation

Critical aspects of grape genes that determine adaptation to an environment such as bud break, flowering, ripening, leaf fall, and dormancy are being investigated. The developmental schedule is the result of interplay between the genome and the environment. In the United States, areas with warmer winters see uneven bud break, leading to uneven ripening later in the season. Areas with short summers require grapes that ripen early.
