Trees are an important component of Appalachian landscapes. AFSRC are studying the effects of tree shading on forage production and quality. One part of that research is the light quality effects on forage production.
Some of the study details are available at:
Belesky, D. P. 2005. Growth of Dactylis glomerata Along a Light Gradient in the
Central Appalachian Region of the Eastern USA: I. Dry Matter Production and Partitioning. Agroforestry Systems, 65(2):81-90.
