Who is conducting the study?


Nancy L. Keim, PhD, and Sean H. Adams PhD, from the Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC) and Department of Nutrition, at the University of California, Davis.

What is the purpose of this study?


We hope to learn more about how the food you eat affects measures of metabolic processes going on in the body. Overall these processes are reflected in the ‘metabolome’ – a term applied to the measurement of a multitude of biological compounds in blood, urine, feces, saliva, and breath. By conducting a complete characterization of the metabolome, we hope to discover new metabolites that change in response to diet and might serve as indicators of health.


Who can participate in this study?


Overweight adult women between the ages of 20 and 50 years old who are insulin resistant or have elevated blood lipid profiles.

WHNRC Nutritional Phenotyping Study

What is the purpose of this study?

Our goal is to characterize the “metabolic phenotypes” of healthy people in the general population.  To do this, we will observe several processes that are happening in your body and how they change as your body responds to a meal.

Blueberry and DHA Human Intervention Research Study


Under the direction of Principal Investigator, Daniel H. Hwang PhD, the Nutrition Department and the Western Human Nutrition Research Center are seeking men and women to study the effects of blueberry powder and DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, on immune cell activation and vascular inflammation induced by a moderately high-fat meal.


*  Male or female between 18 - 60 years old with a BMI 18-24.9 kg/m2

*  Non-pregnant or lactating,  non-smokers and non-tobacco users

*  Not taking any anti-inflammatory medications

*  Willing to eat a moderately high saturated-fat pre-test dinner and breakfast, which will include beef and dairy products as fat sources

*  Willing to consume blueberry powder incorporated or omega-3 fatty acid supplement into a breakfast smoothie

*  Willing to provide blood draws before and after the breakfast and to undergo endothelial function measurements

 1 visit for a health screening, 1 visit to pick up a prepared dinner, and 3 visits for test days


Volunteers will be compensated up to $325 for completing the study.
