EEO REPORT- (6-92 through 5-97)

The Gainesville location's EEO/civil rights activities include a variety of educational outreach programs, summer training positions for pre-collegiate and college students, teachers from schools with high minority enrollments, increased diversity through recruitment of graduate students and postdoctoral scientists, extensive cooperation with the University of Florida and Florida A & M University on training of students from pre-collegiate through graduate studies, a series of commemorative/educational programs in the EEO area, and a vigorous volunteer group, "SCIENCE" that encourages programs in the science education area.

I. SCIENCE EDUCATION OUTREACH:

Note: Employees at the Gainesville Location organized a Science education support group with the acronym "SCIENCE" - Scientists Cooperating In Enhancing & Nurturing Children's Education. This group of ARS employees has published an article summarizing their work with both students and teachers in the American Entomologist (1996).

III. COOPERATION WITH 1890'S INSTITUTIONS (and other institutions with significant enrollments of students from minority groups):
 
1992 -1995   Richard T. Arbogast was ADODR of a cooperative research project with Dr. J. D Sedlacek of Kentucky State University, Frankfort, KY on stored product insects. This project was initiated in Savannah, GA and then transferred to Gainesville for FY 95.
1993    Herbert Oberlander was a cooperator on a National Science Foundation Grant proposal submitted by Prof. Asoka Srinivasan of Tougaloo College in Mississippi. Tougaloo is a historically Black College. Dr. Srinivasan visits with Dr. Oberlander on a regular basis as part of long-term joint research interests.
1994-96   Richard Brenner participates in a Capacity Building Grant and funds a graduate student from Florida A&M University, Aliska Akers, through a CRADA that he developed. Ms. Akers is working on a PhD. supervised by William Peters, Chairman of the Entomology Department. She has been working with Dr. Brenner since April 1994.
