THE PROBLEM

  • West Nile virus (WNV) first isolated in 1937
  • Mosquito become infected by feeding on infected birds
  • WNV is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes
  • Jan.  – Nov. 2005, State-wide:  70 Pos. Human & 28 Pos. Bird cases

 

Future WNV Program In The Mississippi Delta

  • Survey mosquito breeding populations for West Nile Virus to identify sites with infected mosquitoes 
  • Develop biological control agents for controlling mosquitoes                   transmitting WNV 
  • Mosquito control with biological control agents produced &                       developed at NBCL 

 

 

WNV Program Goal
