CURRENT AND PAST PROJECTS

Developed and demonstrated a sustainable production system for ohelo, Vacciniumreticulatum, as a specialty crop for berries and as a potted ornamental (2005 - 2010).

Introduced and successfully demonstrated the production potential of low chill blueberry varieties in Hawaii (2002 - 2006).

Developed and demonstrated a cultural management system for 'Kaimana' litchi flowering by synchronizing of vegetative cycles (2000 - 2008).

Etiology study of pre- and post-harvest diseases of tropical fruit germplasm including longan, rambutan and guava have resulted in methods for rapid pathogen detection and host susceptibility screening, as well as improved disease management strategies (2002 - 2010).

Identified and substituted a safer and more available chemical compound for off-season flowering induction in longan.

Introduced and demonstrated the growing and processing of tea, Camelliasinensis, a potential high value niche market crop for Hawaii agriculture diversification (2001 - 2005).

Demonstrated the combined in vitro / container culture system for producing bacterial wilt-free ginger seed rhizomes (2001 - 2003).
