Mission:
The mission of the Formosan Subterranean Termite Research Unit is to identify existing termite control technologies, validate and integrate theminto subterranean termite (particularly Formosan subterranean termite)management systems through large-area pilot tests and replicated, site specific tests in cooperation with other federal agencies, state, public, and private organizations. Integration of present effective technologies into a rational system for managing FST populations and damage will provide immediate relief through reduction in termite populations. Current baiting technologies and selection and application of soil toxicants will be improved through extensive replicated, site-specific experimentation. Fundamental research to find predators or pathogens of the termite and development of known entomopathogenic fungi will focus on biological control of the termite. Measures to reduce populations of the termite through disruption of its biological cycle will be developed. New natural product toxins and new and improved technology for evolving efficacious, sustainable, and environmentally-sound management/colony elimination practices will be developed.
