Mission:
The Insect Control and Cotton Disease Research Unit acquires fundamental and applied knowledge to develop ecologically benign programs to control insects, pathogens, and nematodes that adversely affect productivity of U.S. agriculture. The research elucidates pest biology and ecology; determines effects of climate change on insect pest dispersal patterns; isolates, identifies, synthesizes, formulates, and evaluates insect attractants and other biologically based insect control products; identifies neuropeptides and develops mimics that regulate critical insect life processes and reduce insect infestations; identifies pathogenicity genes in organisms that cause South Carolina boll rot; develops effective technology to reduce cotton losses to California race 4 Fusarium wilt; develops cotton cultivars with enhanced resistance to nematodes; and manipulates the biosynthesis of cotton terpenoids to increase resistance to pathogens and to enhance cottonseed value. Unit research is customer driven and will significantly enhance productivity and profitability of U.S. farmers through development of new technology and protocols for efficacious and environmentally sensitive pest management.
