Mission:
The mission of the Plant and Animal Genetic Resources Preservation Unit is to provide safe long-term storage, ensuring maximal longevity of plants, animals, microbes, aquatic organisms and insects and coordinate their availability, access to desirable genes and gene complexes, conservation, and utilization. Our Unit manages the long term storage of the entire collection of the National Plant Germplasm System, the National Animal Program, and is helping to build a National Microbial backup collection. We manage the wealth of data associated with these collections. Our collections are stored in a state-of-the-art cryogenic facility or in long term cold storage vaults and are monitored for viability throughout storage. We collaborate with other international genebanks, botanic gardens, animal breed associations, non-government organizations, other federal agencies, and international governments. Our research pertains to better utilization of the collections and optimizing preservation techniques. We provide training for students, other scientists, and genebank managers.
