Mission Statement

The mission of the ARS Research Laboratory in Prosser, WA, is germplasm improvements for enhanced resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, improved crop quality, and development of sustainable integrated cropping systems for irrigated specialty crops, edible legumes, forages, and biofuel feedstocks.

Specific objectives are to: (i) develop new germplasm lines of the above crops with enhanced resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, greater nutritional and phytonutrient values, and improved processing qualities; (ii) determine the cause and control of various diseases of the above crops, and develop integrated crop management and advanced crop breeding techniques to minimize the negative impacts of diseases on crop production and product quality; (iii) develop advanced molecular technologies for rapid and accurate detection of disease causal organisms in plants and soil; (iv) develop technologies for sustainable irrigated rotation cropping systems to optimize net returns, enhance soil quality, and minimize negative environmental impacts by developing best practice for management of nutrients, weeds, irrigation, tillage, crop residue, and cover crops, soil amendments, animal manure, and trace gas emissions; (v) develop strategies to increase biofuel feedstocks production in the Northwest.
