Develop ecological and sustainable methods to achieve and maintain root and soil health for crops grown in conventional and organic farming systems, with emphasis on biologically-based controls of soilborne pathogens of wheat, barley and biofuel brassicas. Determine the etiology, epidemiology, and ecology of root diseases and aspects of the biochemistry and genetics of the host-pathogen interactions. Develop molecular-based methods to detect and quantify pathogens. Characterize soil and rhizosphere microbiomes and identify microbial antagonists with ability to protect plants against pathogen attack and promote root and soil health. Determine biochemical and genetic mechanisms of biocontrol of soilborne pathogens by antagonists and develop improved biocontrol systems through genetic manipulation of antagonists. Develop technology for application of biocontrol systems in the field by management of naturally occurring or introduced biocontrol agents.
